6 minutes by taxi from JR Shimosuwa station

Kaminoyu (onsen of the Gods) is situated in a peaceful forest in the mountains that surround Shimosuwa. It was built in 1934 and renovated in 1993.
The two separate baths (male/female) have bright orange water (that is rich in iron) and floor to ceiling windows on two sides that can be opened up for full enjoyment of the surrounding forest.

There are 10 traditional Japanese rooms, 3 of which have been recently renovated, and the passageways to the rooms have traditional Japanese antiques and artifacts tastefully laid out.

There is a really cozy lounge area with comfortable western sofas, which still manages to retain its Japanese atmosphere.
Non residents can use the baths for 700 yen.

If you want to make a reservation and don't speak Japanese, just say "eigo dekiru otoko no staff onegaishimasu" and wait until one of the male staff come on the line to take your reservation ... use only basic English please.
Prices includes a traditional Japanese evening meal and breakfast (a Western breakfast can be arranged in advance if you don't fancy grilled fish to start the day).
The evening meal has tofu made from peanuts but ordinary tofu can be substituted if you have an allergy to nuts.
