Gingetsu is 10 minutes walk from JR Shimosuwa station or 3 minutes by taxi.

Mainly a ryokan (Japanese inn) that is famed for it's traditional cuisine.
It is situated in a very quiet area in Shimosuwa town and very near to Akimiya temple.

There is a nice Japanese garden (left) that you can sit by while you sip your green tea.

There are 10 traditional Japanese rooms, 3 of which have been recently renovated, and the passageways to the rooms have traditional Japanese antiques and artifacts tastefully laid out.

There is a really cozy lounge area with comfortable western sofas, which still manages to retain its Japanese atmosphere.
Room prices vary depending on the view from the room: the more expensive rooms have views of Lake Suwa and the less expensive ones have views of the mountains. All the rooms are light and spacious with beautiful shoji and bamboo blinds.
The more expensive rooms have showers and include 2 single western beds (which are in a separate room adjoining the main tatami Japanese room) as well as traditional futon.
Gingetsu is famed for it's traditional Japanese cooking and the chef won top prize at the Japanese national cooking contest in March 2002; so you're sure to get the best in fresh Japanese food along with your stay.
A few of the specialities are: carp marunated for 3 days in soya sauce, sake and mirin and smoked eel (which is smoked on the premises) - these are also for sale to take home with you (they're frozen and you just boil them in the bag that they come in). I tried both of these and they were delicious!
Japanese breakfast and dinner are included in the price and although coffee is not normally served, if you mention that you found the onsen on this site you will receive free coffee along with your breakfast.
They also cater for vegetarians and can vary the menu if given notice.
